Rumours are circulating that Facebook will shortly introduce QR codes to user profiles. A number of users have reported two new options (QR Barcode and Generate status QR Barccode) sporadically appearing on their profile over the last few hours. No formal announcement has been made by Facebook. Need a Facebook QR barcode reader ?

Search giant Google have launched Favorite places, a project which will mail out QR code packs to over 100,000 local US businesses which have been the most sought out and researched. Around 9,000 towns in all 50 states are being targeted over the next two weeks.

Australian originated company JMango, which offers a rapid mobile application delivery platform, have entered into a QR code business solutions partnership agreement with QR code patent holder Denso Wave to develop new and innovative QR code solutions. The Global QR project team will consist of both Denso Wave engineers and JMango developers, each with specific roles and responsibilities with the dual core focus of creating global turnkey solutions for the mobile marketplace.

Columbia Sportswear have launched a box life which aims to allow it's customers to choose a previously used cardboard box. A QR code on the outside of each used box allows the purchaser to track where the box has been and also enables pictures to be uploaded to create a history of the box's journey. 60% of customers have taken up the option when buying goods from the website.
GS1, The not-for-profit global organisation dedicated to the design and implementation for global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibilty of supply and demand chains, have published a call to action which aims to give manufacturers, retailers and existing users of the GS1 system guidance on what barcodes they should consider for mobile phone applications. 1D barcode EAN/UPC, 2D datamatrix and Denso's QR code are the only three barcode which have been recommended by GS1. Toykyo based communication desgin company Sinaps latest summer brainstorming session, codenamed Sinap Summer 2009 Project, revolved around making promotional objects out of sand as a new communications method with the company settling on a 6 foot QR code. Focus Features, the art house films division of NBC Universal's Universal Pictures, have branded pedicabs containing QR codes in downtown San Diego during Comic-Con to promote Tim Burton's film 9. Contemporary culture magazine Spektacle, published bi-monthly and available at selected outlets have integrated QR codes into it's latest 36 page edition. Showing an understanding of the core concept of quick repsonse codes the various pages are littered with QR codes, giving readers access to additional articles which the magzine promises " to turn each page into a special reading experience". The issue also contains a vinyl record on the front cover which itself hosts a QR code on it's label directing the reader to recommended music videos. Scanbuy, the US mobile marketing solutions provider, has recently completed a deal with Samsung to pre load their 2D barcode reader onto the Samsung Exclaim (available from US mobile network provider Sprint). Social networking features such as interactive Facebook, Twitter and MySpace are available as part of the one click interface on the slide-out QWERTY keyboard based device.

Cryket.com, the application marketplace for Google's Android platform, have added a convenient QR code link to each download page to easily allow visitors to download the application to their mobile phone. Googles Zxing barcode scanner is available from the site along with 100's of other Android applications.

Print advertising, window cards and flyers will now feature a specific QR code for the property being sold and will direct the user to detailed information on the property as well as offering a virtual tour. Following on from their creative QR code designed for Louis Vuitton Set Japan have released a new designer QR code for fashion designer Marc Jacobs. The hand drawn design matches the Marc brands recent advertising and features the brands mascot Miss Marc. Visitors will be directed to a Japanese mobile website, which will launch on 1st July.
SQLabs SQLiteManager 3.0, the SQL based GUI database manager for MacOS X and Windows, has added QR codes to it's new chart panel functionality. The QR code option joins Line chart, Bar chart, Pie chart, Venn chart, Scatter, Radar and Map on the options listbox when building a SQL statement.

Cambridge based company Airsource, which released the iPhone QR code reader Optiscan last year, have now released OptiShare. The software allows you to create and share QR codes direct from your iPhone. All QR codes created by the application are stored for later retrieval and can be emailed (iphone 3.0 only). Contacts, URL's and static text QR codes can be generated.

Radio 1's recent Big Weekend saw the introduction of Get Lily on your mobile QR code posters at various points around the site as part of a three pronged mobile plan to serve mobile video content. The Walt Disney company have released posters near the Ikebukuro Station (Japan) which show Micky Mouse, Donald Duck and Stitch partially covered by QR codes and the eyes and nose of each character can be seen in the centre of the QR code. Recent QRMe scan activity has revealed a cluster of scans in the North Eastern part of the the western hemisphere. Although the US is the largest source of traffic to QRMe it seems that Europeans are more inclined to pick up their mobile and scan our QRMe code to test out the service. MusicSugoi is a new Japanese service which means 'Awesome music' in Japanese and allows independent artists and DJ's to promote their music to their respective fan bases in Japan. The service provides both a main web page and a mobile web page which links to iTunes Japan and Amazon Japan. The site also allocates a QR code linked to the artists mobile website.
Online bookstore Editoras online, which works with the main Brazillian publishers for the promotion and selling of books, have developed The living book. Live Twitter messages are categorised into love or hate and 100 each of these are linked to a QR code in the booklet. The URL's are changed every 7 days, making the booklet a dynamic open source collaborative view of peoples expressions.
